Your approach to selecting rugs and carpet that align with the firms timeless, sophisticated aesthetic
"When it comes to selecting rugs for our studio, durability is always my first consideration. It's crucial to assess how well the rug will hold up over time, especially in relation to the lifestyle of the homeowners. Aligning quality and durability with how the owners live in the home is paramount for me. The second aspect I carefully consider is texture and color. This combination plays a pivotal role in crafting the spaces we design. I delve into the narrative of each room and then build on that. Typically, the first step is procuring a few pieces of furniture, allowing them to guide the rug selection process. However, there are instances where I stumble on a rug that inspires me, and I build the room's texture and color scheme around it. Flexibility in approach is key, as it ensures that every space we create feels cohesive, inviting, and uniquely tailored to the individuals who will inhabit it. I have a penchant for rugs that are simple yet complex in their construction. Natural tones, often from undyed materials, hold a special place in my heart. I revel in working with materials that are produced without manipulation - I believe it's what gives a design its authenticity and grounding."
How would you describe your design style?
"My design style is deeply rooted in nature. I draw immense inspiration from the earth, finding solace and connection in its tones and textures. Picture winter neutrals, where the grasses take on a golden hue and the sky wears a soft gray veil. These are the hues that resonate with me. Additionally, I'm drawn to the sultry, rich emerald tones of summer, embodying a light-hearted yet ultra-cool essence. In my designs, I aim to evoke a sense of comfort while still exuding luxurious sophistication. I meticulously consider which materials will enhance this feeling, embracing their natural qualities to craft spaces that are both inviting and refined. I hesitate to confine my design style to a specific label, as it's more of an ethos than a rigid aesthetic. It's about embracing natural compositions, weaving narratives, and embracing holistic processes to create spaces that not only look beautiful but also feel deeply meaningful and connected to the world around us."
Do you prefer traditional or contemporary rugs?
"It truly depends on the space. I find myself drawn to bridging worlds, seamlessly merging different styles to create something truly unique. Quality and comfort are paramount considerations regardless of the design direction. Whether it's a traditional or contemporary space, both ends of the spectrum offer opportunities for exceptional craftsmanship and inviting textures.When approaching a project, it's crucial to understand the goals and aspirations of the home while also infusing a fresh perspective. I enjoy the challenge of combining traditional elements with contemporary touches, creating a space that feels familiar yet innovative. It's about finding that perfect balance where timeless elegance meets modernism, resulting in a design that resonates with both the past and the present."
Are there one or two STARK styles or collections you keep going back to?
"The Stillman and Digby, are my absolute favorites, my tried and true Stark companions (besides Tom!). Crafted with exquisite hand loom techniques, they exude a timeless elegance that never fails to impress. What I love most about them is their versatility - available in a few natural colorways, all within a neutral palette. Each hue serves as a stunning foundational tone, effortlessly blending into any space while adding depth and warmth. Whether I'm designing a cozy living room or a serene bedroom, these rugs always come through, elevating the ambiance with their understated beauty."

Are there other details you account for when sourcing rugs and carpets for your projects?
"When sourcing a rug, there are several factors I consider beyond just its appearance. If I'm on the hunt for a vintage rug, delving into its history becomes an adventure for me! I want to understand how the rug has been treated over time and the journey it's been on. Often, chemicals are used in the preservation process, and it's crucial for me to know exactly what those chemicals are. Being aware of the treatments ensures that I'm making informed decisions about what I'm bringing into a client's home. After all, these rugs aren't just decorative pieces—they're integral to the space where people live, walk, and sometimes even lay on with their fur babies or human babies."
